Team prepare to scale Mount Kilimanjaro
Wednesday 29th July 2009

A GROUP of friends from Bromsgrove and Droitwich will be hoping to reach their peak when they take part in a charity climb.

Louise Chance, 32, Anna Carriero, 32, Nick Byng, 27, and Gary Byng, 24, from the two towns, are set to start their attempt at scaling Mount Kilimanjaro this Friday, (August 7).

The team plan to walk six to eight hours each day, covering 18 kilometres, and are aiming to reach the summit 5895 metres high, in the early hours of Thursday, August 14.

The team have completed a six month training programme to prepare them for the climb, involving lots of hill walking including Snowdon, the Brecon Beacons, and the Malverns.

The trip will be raising money for the Primrose Hospice, in St Godwalds Road, who offer advice and support to cancer patients and their families.

One of the climbers, Louise Chance, said: “Three members of the group have lost their grandparents to cancer.

“My grandad Roy Chance was lucky to spend his final days in a caring, supportive and peaceful environment keeping his dignity whilst surrounded by his family, this was provided on the specialist ward with superb staff and facilities for the patients and the family.”

She added the hospice needed continual funding to maintain their services, and they hoped to raise £1,000 by the time they return.

Anyone interested in supporting the climbers can donate directly to the Primrose Hospice, by calling 01527 875444. Alternatively donate online by visiting www.justgiving.co.uk/louloukilli

Men Of Iron- Bromsgrove Advertiser

THREE lads from Hanbury will become men of iron when they compete in a national tournament against 1,500 athletes.

Brothers James and Nick Byng, aged 21 and 24, and Richard Lomas, 26, are competing in the Ironman UK 70.3 event at the Exmoor national park, which will test their skills in a variety of disciplines.

The gruelling event will see them cover a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13 mile run. The event was originally created to end the argument over who are the fittest - swimmers, cyclists or runners.

This year's winners will have the chance to compete in the Ironman 3.0 World Championships in Florida.

All three are competing for the leukemia cancer charity Clic Sargent. James said: "We've raised £1,000 so far, which is great. Anything more is a bonus, but we are aiming for £2,000 now." The event will be held on Sunday, June 17.

Anyone wishing to sponsor the lads should contact them through Gary Byng and Son's company website at www.gbands.co.uk or telephone us and speak to Kelly about how to donate.
